A day in the life of a dock walker

5am: first person's alarm goes off, wake up, mumble "turn it OFF" (no one listens) roll over, go back to sleep (whilst trying to ignore incessant snoring going on)

6am: my alarm starts, turn it off, pretend it never happened

6.10am: alarm goes off again, realise it must be true, rip duvet cover off and climb off my bunk, tip toe around the room trying to get ready in the dark

... pour myself a bowl of cornflakes from the communal cupboard (free stuff)... walk to the train station

... buy a croissant and some coffee, get on the train, carefully select seat, dodging all weirdos and French homeless people pushing their 2 cats around in prams.

7.40am: arrive in Cannes

... walk about 400km to the first port, meet fellow dockwalkers along the way, make polite conversation (so... had any luck yet? Any day work? Where are you off to next? SAME questions, ALL the time). Sneakily step up the speed in order to get to the boats first.

... receive countless bat from almost every single boat... (NO day work, FULLY crewed)... turn around, walk another 3000km to the next port, start process all over again... hand out a few cvs (top score) walk back to the train station, get train to the next port and repeat.

...feet start aching, stomach starts growling, CVs start running out... back to Antibes... walk to the shops, buy some dinner and a few bottles of R10 wine, wait for 30 people to finish using the washing machine, eventually get to use the washing machine... RELAX... drinking, card games, walk to the Blue Lady or The Hop Store (one beer, because they cost R50)... shower, get stuff ready for the next day, go to sleep aaaaaand it starts all over again.

Yeah. That's pretty much it.
