So I went to the Arabuko-Sokoke forest early this morning with my pike-piki friend Bakari and I saw not one, not two, but SEVEN golden-rumped elephant shrews. I had a guide come with me. Anyone that knows me will agree that this was absolutely essential for, I donno, survival. So I was walking in the forest for almost four hours, spotting birds and having fun and learning stuff and taking pictures. We were walking through the forest when all of a sudden the guide stops whistling and stands dead still... "common duiker"... rustle rustle rustle... he looks behind him... "SHREW!", and then "oooooh my GOD Careeeee, never ever did I have that, and at THIS time, I have NEEEEVER seen a duiker in this area and then also a SHREW, on the same path, Carreeee my FRIEND". He was pretty excited. I guess I was too (I think).
We came out the forest, got back on the bike and headed to the Gedi Ruins, unfortunately I was there at noon, which meant the light wasn't great for photographing it, which I was excited about, but it was a toss up between seeing the forest creatures and getting good photos of the ruins, I chose the fuzzy forest animals. I also got a guide at the ruins and I'm glad I did, he knew so much and it was all very interesting.
I got back pretty exhausted, but four mangoes, two papayas and a bag of cashew nuts richer. A really good day, indeed. I'm off to an awesome looking place called Che Shale early tomorrow morning. I've managed to hitch a ride with someone I met at the backpackers, well, most of the way there anyways.
Still haven't told you about the eco-lodge that I've been staying at, it's called Distant Relatives, you should have a look...
